Creating Your Own Happiness

Let’s talk happiness for a minute. One of the most common questions I’m asked that isn’t fitness related (or is it??) is about staying happy and positive. This is something that I’ve worked hard on. Seems weird right, working on happiness? You  may be thinking, we feel emotions, we don’t create them. And while that’s true, we can decide which emotions we go along for the ride with. Just because I feel upset, and believe me sometimes I do, doesn’t mean I have to ride it out all day, let it ruin my week or put me in funk.

Let’s take a look at some history, my history :D. In high school I was borderline terrified of what people at school thought about me. It really caused me some social anxiety. And I was in a social situation daily in high school. I stuck to people I knew or didn’t talk at all. I was the quiet girl. This made 3/4 of my year and 8 hours of my day less than ideal because I’m really not a quiet person. At home and with friends I was a crazy blabber mouth! I let my mind spin fake negative situations of people disliking me turn my reality into something that I didn’t enjoy.

I also wasn’t always the best at letting a small negative go. One bad race would send me into thinking I would never do well in Track or Cross Country again. One small agitation in my day could ruin it.

Lucky for me I had parents that exposed us to personal growth, positive thinking and working to be your best self. Without these things I definitely wouldn’t be the person I am today. This vlog/blog is really about things that saved me from myself. Turned my negative attitude around and allow me to be a much more pleasant person (most of the time, I mean I still have my moments :D).

Life isn’t always rainbows and petting fuzzy puppies. Training our mind to deal with less than ideal situations in a positive and constructive way makes an amazing difference. We have so much more power over our day that we give ourselves credit for just by changing the way we react or look at things. So, mold that mind and think a way that works for you not against you!

As with anything, little tiny steps build up to where you want to go! Start with just one thing and once you get that down add another. Maybe its 10 pages of a positive book a day or listing 3 things you’re grateful for every morning. You don’t have to make a radical shift in one day,  just start! 🙂

I promise I have times where I let things get to me too, these things just help those times be less frequent and much shorter! You don’t have to be perfect you just have to keep working at it!

So here’s the quick summary of the things I explain in the video below:

  1. Stop worrying about what others think of you. Not worth it!
  2. Keep working on yourself/improving (not just physically).
  3. Do  your best in everything you do. Not just the things you want to do.
  4. Be grateful and focus on what goes right.
  5. Make sure your goals and your actions line up.
  6. Take time to do things you enjoy!

What’s something you do to keep a positive mindset?
